The Cary SLP-05 is a much better contender against the ARC LS25 but the SLP-05 is pricey (not unlike the LS25).

I found the Cary SLP-05 to be one of the most dynamic and transparent sounding tube preamps I have ever owned. It was harmonically rich and robust sounding and mated very well with my Pass X150. It was one of the best sounding setups I ever put together.

I liked the SLP-05 & X150 combo better than the pass X2.5 & X150.5 combo. They were both excellent but the Cary (with it's tubes) had a more harmonically rich presentation and a bit of warmth.
